Two Tips For Keeping Things Out Of Your Sewer Drains

Sewer drains are for water and sewage only, but you could have other things in there that you do not know about. Taking care of your sewer drains properly is important, as you could start having clogged up pipes and other plumbing problems. Below are two tips on how to keep things out of them in order prevent any plumbing problems from occurring in the future.

1. Garbage Disposal

If you have a garbage disposal in your kitchen, you need to be careful what you throw down into it. Before you turn the disposal on, always turn on your cold water for a few minutes first, and let it drain down the sink. After you turn the disposal on and start grinding food in it, let the cold water continue to run for a few minutes after you are finished so the food will be completely washed down the drain. Make sure you only use cold water, because it causes grease to solidify so the grinder can chop it up before it reaches the trap.

To keep the walls clean inside of the disposal, grind some hard materials, such as fish bones, chicken bones, and small fruit pits. These items work well because they will scour the inside of the chamber. Break up any large bones into smaller pieces before you put them in or they may get stuck in the grinder.

If you notice odor coming from the disposal, grind peelings from oranges or lemons to freshen it up.

2. Mud

Mud can get into the sewer lines from your driveway or any other area yard waste. When mud becomes wet, it compacts, which makes it very hard to break down into a liquid and it can get stuck in your sewer lines, causing a clog that can be hard to repair. To keep this from happening, keep your driveway drain cleaned out by sweeping or using a power hose to rid your driveway of dirt and other debris that may cause an eventual clog.

If you have questions about keeping your drains clear and clean, contact a plumber in your area. He or she can come to your home to show you some tips on how to properly care for your homes drains and how to prevent any future problems from occurring. About Me

Never Settle for a Home You Don't Love

My parents were barely "making ends meet" when I was a child, so we lived in a small home that they rarely upgraded. However, they were devoted parents and I cherish every memory made in that house. They were adamant that I go to college, and after I graduated, I was very lucky to land a good job quickly. After I bought my home, I had a few renovations performed to it to make it perfect for me. When the job was done I decided to pay it back to my parents for all they did for me as a child and have their kitchen remodeled. Once I can afford it, I want to help make a few more changes to their home. I have been researching and learning so much about home remodeling, I decided to start a blog to share my remodeling tips and experiences on!
