If you live in a city, you are probably connected to the municipal sewer. The sewer line carries waste water away from your house to a water treatment plant so that it can be cleaned. If the lines that lead from your house to the main sewer line in the street get clogged, you can end up with sewage in your house, which will take a lot of work for you to clean up and can even be considered a biohazard. So, how can you keep that from happening?
Baking Soda and Vinegar
When vinegar is added to baking soda, a chemical reaction happens, causing the baking soda to bubble up. You can use this reaction to help keep your sewer pipes clean. It will generally work on the pipes closer to your drains, but any bit helps. What you will need to do is use a funnel to get the baking soda into your drains. When you have the soda in your drain, it's time to add the vinegar. Once you have done that, put a plate, cover, or drain cover over the drain. That will keep the carbon dioxide produced from the chemical reaction in the drain pipes. After the baking soda and vinegar mixture has been sitting in your pipes for a while, rinse it down by running hot water down your pipes.
Watch What You Flush
Another way to keep your sewer lines clean and clog-free is to make sure that you are careful about what you flush down your toilet. You should avoid flushing things like paper towels, female sanitary products, and clumping cat litter. You should also avoid flushing the so-called flushable bathroom personal wipes. While they say that the wipes are flushable, they don't break down the way that toilet paper does and can end up clogging your sewer pipes because they will stick to the sides of the pipes and then start to conglomerate into a huge ball.
Professionals
If you are worried about how clogged your pipes are or you have already had one sewer back-up, then it's time to call in the professionals. There are plumbers who specialize in sewer pipes and unclogging them. They have tools that they can send down your sewer pipes to see where the blockage is. Then they can use different tools to break up the clog and get some of the debris off the sides of the pipe.
